Inspired by the grace and elegance of shorebirds, this ceramic sculpture captures the bird in a serene resting pose. Perched atop a separate ceramic plinth adorned with images of bears, the piece creates a powerful connection between species and ecosystems. The vibrant colors are intended to draw attention, sparking awareness of human-caused threats to bird populations, including habitat loss and pesticide use. By highlighting these cumulative impacts, the piece invites viewers to reflect on the urgent need for conservation and coexistence.
Colourful Shorebird
Bob Acton.
Since early childhood, nature has been a source of profound peace and joy, driving my ceramic sculptural practice. My figurative sculptures blend organic forms with bold colors and textures, creating a visual dialogue between the natural and the abstract. By incorporating found objects and mixed media, I invite viewers to engage with the work on a sensory level.
Each piece undergoes a meticulous process of firing and embellishment, reaching temperatures up to 2200°F and adorned with pigments, stains, oxides, gold leaf, and encaustic wax. My goal is to coax forth the unique personality of each sculpture, inspiring viewers to connect with the earth's vibrant energy and find solace in its beauty. Through my art, I aspire to spark wonder, nurture appreciation, and ignite a deep reverence for the natural world. When collectors tell me my sculptures touch their hearts and reveal a distinct spirit, I feel I've achieved my purpose as an artist.
My studio is in Alberta, Canada next to the Rocky Mountains where I find inspiration about nature and biodiversity.
